End of November Update - 16 days until departure

The p elag ic birds have returned in force! Most species didn't ever really leave but there have been notic e ably few nests of all the species since August. It makes sense that we would not see as many birds nesting, the nesting season for most species avoids the hottest part of the year. The majority of chicks simply would not survive to fledge in the punishing heat.    The Tropicbirds, Frigates, Boobies and a few Brown  Noddies  still occupied Johnston during those months but we noticed the absence of the Sooty Tern colony, White Terns and Black  Noddies . Just this past Wednesday Sarah and I were able to document the first Sooty Tern eggs! We had been watching the colony do their aerial mating dances for the last 5 weeks or so, and they had been teasing us with loafing behavior (meaning they just sat on the ground and LOOKED like they were incubating an egg). Finally, on the weekly check, Sarah and I noticed the  Sooties  were more interested in protecting their territory

We have 2 Wilsons Of Course we have to have some tribute to Zoolander in the Ant Lab. The irony of the graffiti at the internet cafe is humorous  I added this to the internet cafe door Linda is the 6th member of the crew, our house mother and overall mascot. She controls the weather. Do not anger her or you will certainly suffer some type of 'accident' and bad karma. Short eared owl skeleton The gate. It's all too real.

November 7, 2019 Johnston Update Just a little over a month until our ride arrives! I could write some stuff about time flying and blah blah blah but I don't like dwelling on that kind of sentiment more that I already do inside my own head. Somehow putting that out into the universe feels like it compromises my karma. So I'll stick to the facts!  Our replacement crew has been confirmed to have reached Oahu and I can just imagine them running around like chickens with their heads cut off, shopping and quarantining and packing just like we did when we got to Oahu. I hope they get to do at least HALF of the cool things we got to do as a group for team building and overall adventure. One of the kids is from Lopez Island! Pacific North Westerners/Island kids unite! I've started a countdown whiteboard so that the arrival of the IMUA doesn't take us by surprise. We have a lot we want to get done before they get here and we'll have to devote all our time to trai
